Intelligent Power Modules (IPM)

An Intelligent Power Module (IPM) is a sophisticated, high-performance power semiconductor package that integrates power switching devices with the control and protection circuitry necessary for reliable operation. While a discrete IGBT or SiC MOSFET requires a separate gate driver and protection circuit, an IPM consolidates these into a single, compact, and highly reliable module.

Think of an IPM as a "power-system-in-a-box"—it is designed to simplify complex power designs by handling the "intelligence" of the power conversion internally.

Key Components of an IPM

  • Power Switches: Typically a 3-phase bridge configuration of IGBTs (or sometimes SiC MOSFETs) with integrated anti-parallel diodes.
  • Gate Driver Circuitry: High-side and low-side gate drivers that are optimized for the specific power switches, ensuring perfectly timed switching and minimizing signal propagation delays.
